What am I here for

It is often said that the journey is more important than the destination. This is especially true about discovering what we are created for. Our lives are short and fast, we arrive at our destination before we have even fully appreciated the journey. Thus, each one of us is searching for a space where we can make an impact, so we can look back at our journey with pride and fulfilment.

So, how do we achieve this when the world constantly tells us what we should do, casting doubt in our minds which causes us to second guess ourselves? How do we know where we are intended to have an impact, or what we are called to do to create this impact? We look to our creator; our source of life.

Jeremiah 1:5 says that even before we were formed in our mother’s womb, God knew who we are and approved of us. Later on, Jeremiah says in 29:11that God’s plans for our lives are those of peace and wellbeing, for a hope and a future. When we surrender ourselves to who knows us best (God), we set ourselves on the path to discovering our identity and our purpose.

The more we walk with God, the more he reveals to us his desires for our lives and our own desires for His kingdom. We all have a passion, something that drives us, something that we are good at. When we understand what that is, we draw closer to understanding what we are called to do. This is how we gain our identity which then drives our purpose. Philippians 2:4 warns us to not simply look out for our own interests but also for the interests of others. Herein lies our purpose, to take the gifting that God has given us and use it to serve others.

We serve others in many different ways, there is no particular way to use your gifting. How you use your gift in service will be determined by your environment, your resources and your attitude. One thing is for sure though, whatever we do should be done to glorify God as we see in Colossians 3: 23–24.
